"When are you speaking to Haim?" a message pops up. "My request was to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

The evidence suggests a special quality is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path performing shows at local delicatessens with their family. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy contenders.

"The numerous instances on tour that fans approached us and said, 'After your show, I got a guitar'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That's the greatest compliment. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire others to form a group."

Grammy Milestone

The band are speaking from their homes, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in contention for the award.

"I watch the lists every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the honor isn't lost on the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant milestone," adds Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the women that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The record came out of a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that strange liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The words track departures and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them working out in real life who they want to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to make an effort in shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed confidence demanded a new sound – more unpolished and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The trio's honesty inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their dating tales.

One man broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Future

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their standing in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide audience.

But Haim will consistently be their number one focus.

"We have been performing since I was four," says Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
