Dozens Missing Following Vessel Carrying 200 Migrants Goes Down near the coast of The Gambia.

The shipwrecked vessel was found beached on a sandbar, officials report.

No fewer than seven individuals have died and numerous others are missing following a vessel transporting around two hundred people attempting to reach the European continent capsized off the coast of Gambia, officials state.

The boat overturned late Wednesday night near Jinack village in the northern bank region and it was afterwards located "stranded on a sandbar", the nation's defense ministry announced officially.

96 individuals have been saved to date and a search is continuing for other passengers who were aboard the sunken boat that was heading towards the Canary Islands of Spain.

The hazardous trip over the Atlantic Ocean has emerged as a rising pathway for African migrants trying to reach the EU.

Nearly 47,000 individuals arrived at the Canary Islands in the year 2024 and data indicates in excess of nine thousand individuals have lost their lives trying.

Ongoing Mission

In the aftermath of the disaster, The Gambian Navy launched a search-and-rescue operation, involving a number of military boats and a fishing boat that joined the effort, the defence ministry said.

Reports indicate several of the victims are not Gambian nationals and that their identities are still being verified.

The remains of the seven individuals who perished at sea have been recovered, and a dozen of the saved are reported to be in grave health and receiving urgent medical care.

A Common Migration Route

This West African nation is a frequent corridor taken by migrants trying to reach Europe, typically through hazardous voyages across ocean and terrain.

Over the past few years, the European bloc has reached agreements with multiple North African nations with the goal of limiting irregular migration.
